‘The CAMEL Collection’
Less blatant, but still running remarkably close to the parent cigarette campaign, is the advertising in the United States for a range of leisure clothing under the name “The CAMEL Collection”. The outdoor setting is there, as are the familiar logo and the current cigarette headline: “Where a man belongs”. The man is smoking, and beside him is a CAMEL pack.
But in the U. S. A. cigarette advertising is still permitted, and the “CAMEL Collection” ads go so far as to carry the standard cigarette health warning clause. Like the CAMEL expedition series the advertising is clearly an extension of the parent campaign, projecting the same overall CAMEL image but beginning to impart it to male-oriented products and services other than cigarettes. The clothing venture, though the garments bear the maker’s name “John Henry”, carries little conviction as a self-propelling business, and is seen as a direct promotional action.
