Comparative approaches in cigarette advertising: BAT. Nederland win their action in a recent test case
Comparative advertising is commonplace in certain product fields - notably that of motor cars - and few marketing men would commit themselves dogmatically to the opinion that it was unreservedly a good or a bad thing. In cigarette advertising it has been increasingly evident in a number of markets. It is, one could argue, a logical development of the traditional cigarette advertising approaches which were comparative in theme even though no other brand was named. Examples of these would include such well-used copy lines as "the mildest of Marylands", "the lowest 'tar' of all cigarettes", and so on. Now overtly comparative approaches are with us. Recent examples include the following: U. K. Silk Cut advertising comparing league table deliveries favorably against those of other brands. U. K. Benson & Hedges ad, not mentioning names but showing a "blindfold" pack obviously of Embassy as of a value comparison with larger, higher-prestige B&H. (See "Marketing News" of June 1976). Brazil: Galaxy (Philip Morris) features a table of deliveries of Brazil's best-selling brands (not actually named) in order to demonstrate its low delivery ratings. U. S. A. Kent Golden Lights is currently running the campaign illustrated here, in which the packs of 18 other brands are shown with 'tar' deliveries higher than Kent Golden Lights' 8mg. It is in the area of League Table ratings that comparative advertising is most evident. How B. A. T. Nederland, our Dutch associates, succeeded in an action to prevent their brands being illustrated in comparative advertisements for the competition brand ROXY makes an interesting and enlightening story.
