MARLBORO and menswear

Over recent years MARLBORO has made consistent use of promotions involving a range of self-liquidator items reflecting the outdoor Western image of the brand. There was the "Chuck Wagon" series of items such as barbecue sets, and also the "Country Store" range of cowboy gear. One of the most recent of these promotional offers is that of a Hudson's Bay Coat, for which an advertisement is shown here. However, at the same time MARLBORO are involved in a rather different menswear operation, which is current in a number of markets, primarily in continental Europe. This involves the marketing and advertising - through cinema, magazines and glossy print brochures - of a wide range of fashion leisure wear. The overall title of the range is "MARLBORO Leisure Wear", further defined by the words ".. made by Andrea de Adamich under the authority of the trade mark owners". The familiar inverted chevron device in red and white is featured in all the promotional material.
Where this operation differs from that carried on by CAMEL in the United States is that it operates as a fully fledged clothing operation, involving a complete range of garments and having commercial credibility including acceptance by the trade.
It provides an interesting example of the use of a tobacco trade-ark in a business which is run quite separately from that of MARLBORO cigarettes, yet where the name and graphics are the same, and where the goods in question fit with ready compatibility the image which MARLBORO has acquired. One of the countries where the MARLBORO Leisure 'Wear range is marketed is Italy, where there is a total bar on cigarette advertising.
