Pack-reminder visual approaches, easiest to create because 'Pop-art' packs for Sobranie in Germany
One of the more unusual trends in package design for cigarettes is the "pop- art" treatment given to SOBRANIE, test marketed in West Germany by Reemtsma. There are three different designs, all in the same style and all sharing a common overall colour scheme. Each design is printed in two "mirror image" styles. The backs of the hinge-lid packs are shown in our color illustration: the fronts carry a vertical white panel down the centre of the design on which wording in small type tells a product story, and credits the pack design to artist Milton Glaser of New York. The cigarettes themselves appear to be conventional.
With increasing restrictions on advertising and other means of promoting cigarette brands, it is likely that we shall be seeing more experimentation in cigarette pack design. While current leading brands tend mostly to have fairly traditional designs, new techniques in printing, materials and art treatments are already being tested - the "gold on gold" treatment of the U. K. HALLMARK pack for example, and the overall pictorial CHESTERFIELD and L & M packs from the United States. Among Group brands, one of the most notable cigarette-packaging innovations with strong consumer appeal was the use of laminated gold foil board for BENSON & HEDGES - a departure which has brought a flood of emulators. What is coming next?
