RJR Nabisco, facing a $900 million drop in profits after this year's tobacco price wars, will force major cuts in its cigarette marketing expenditures next year. Though couponing and trade promotions will be the first targets, R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. last week acknowledged that it’s spending on traditional advertising; merchandising and sports sponsorships will also feel the cuts. Analyst estimate RJR will need to cut $600 million to $700 million in operating costs to keep 1994 profits stable. Expected to be snug the first cuts is at least some of the $30 million that Special Events Reports says RJR spends on marques sports sponsorships. Also on the line, however, is the $63 million the tobacco company spends on ensured media and the additional amount ft spends on point of purchase. Jason Wright, VP-worldwide communications for parent RJR Nabisco, said the cigarette Industry's new lower prices do not allow the level of product promotions that had been sustained in the past. Long Haynes Carr Lintas, Winston-Salem, N. C., handles 'Winston Weekends' and other probations and some discount brands. But the cuts will also deflate billings at FCB/Leber Katz Partners, New York, Winston's ad agency; Nezzina/Brown, Haw York, agency for timed advertising and probation; and Trone Advertising, Greensboro, N. C., agency for other RJR brands.

Winston Menthol sales slipped to 1.88 billion units in 1972 as the brand's rate of sales decline seemed to slow. Its total market share and share of the mentholated filter segment, however, both dropped, to 0.3% and 1.4% respectively.
Although Maxwell listed sales for only a 100 mm style, advertising expenditures were reported for two Winston menthol styles; Winston Super Kings and, previously unlisted, Winston Kings. The king-size version was allocated $111,000 in newspaper ads for 1972. There was little other evidence of its existence. The extra-length version's expenditures were $3.5 million with nearly 53% allocated to newspaper. Outdoor advertising accounted for another 28% of the brand's budget with magazines and national supplements also receiving significant allocations. CPM for Winston Super King Menthol was $1.97.
