Camel Menthol Filter

Following national distribution of Camel Filter in early August, 1966, Camel Menthol Filter was introduced into the original Camel Filter test market on August 25, 1966, Trade Journal Reports listed the teat markets as Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina; Providence, Rhode Island; Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Columbus, Ohio; New Orleans, Louisiana; Forsythe Counly, North Carolina; Knoxville, Tennessee, Joplin, Missouri; and Rochester, New York. In late December, Reynolds announced that the test market would be expanded, but did not specify when or where.
The main copy theme used in TV ads emphasized the name, "Camel," using the copyline, "Rich tobacco taste, fresh, menthol flavor. But above all, a Camel."
Three-month moving average for the initial three months indicated a market share from a low of .25% to a high of 1.57% in seven markets. The average market share for the seven markets was .70%.

1967 (.359 Menthol)
Camel 85 mm Menthol Filter still-in a testing stage in early 1967 moved slowly to U.S. distribution. A change to a darker green package with a gold and tan camel was mace. The package was signatured: "For cooler taste."
With the pack change came a product change. Menthol was increased to its current level from a .275% position. Tar and nicotine were still just below the majority of brands in the segment, Cork tipping of 24 mm and a 20 mm filter length remained the same throughout 1967.
Advertising of $82,000 in TV, $2,000 in radio, and $35,000 in print was used. In using TV, Camel Menthol Filters only did spot :60 commercials. They never tagged with the network ads where the non-menthol filter Camel was running. Oil one TV spot, the copyline, "Cooler than Cool" was used.
Market share ran .02%. Sales in 1967 were .106 billion cigarettes.
