Understanding of the Communication Sought by the Manufacturer

In order to obtain more details on respondents' understanding of the concepts, they were asked about their opinions regarding the message sought to be conveyed regarding the brand by its manufacturers.
- Concept-A:
Looking at concept (A), respondents across both nationalities were able to give clear definition of the message which the manufacture is trying to convey. The main message was seen to be:
• a new product from Marlboro
• medium tar and nicotine level which would be less harmful to the health
"It is an improved cigarette and its side-effect are less"

"... it is a new product combining between red and white"
(Arab Expat – Riyadh – Marlboro Red smoker)
"New Marlboro cigarettes with different flavor and good taste"

"They are trying to show that Marlboro Medium is less harmful for the health"

- Concept B:
In terms of Concept (B), majority of the respondents mentioned that the pictures shown did not convey the intended message of the manufacturer. It was further expressed that the visuals did not portray a relationship or link between the advertisement and the brand, thus being vague and leaving the readers with doubts and questions.

Smoker Stereotype:
To obtain a further understanding of their reactions, to the advertising respondents were asked to describe the type of smoker who would be most attracted to the brand as perceived through the concepts.
The viewpoint regarding the profile of a typical smoker remained unchanged from that imagined at the time of exposure to the Medium name, i.e. male aged 17-25 years, well educated and high social class. Respondents were not able to specify any differences in the profile between the two concepts.
