Tobacco Cigs Brand Marketing News

KGDL's 'Koolhouse' self liquidator

From Brenda Henderson, Brand Analyst for Kool with Brown & Williamson, we have received a report of the brand's latest promotion in the United States. With an invitation to "Come where it's cool", smokers are offered a ten-sided garden house (pavilion, gazebo or what you will) which is suitable for parties or simply for sitting in the shade. With lawn furniture it provides comfortable seating for four. The "Koolhouse" measuring 11 feet 2 inches in diameter, has folding walls and doors (with aluminum frames and fiberglass screening), a heavy-duty vinyl roof cover in white and green, and complete assembly instructions. The premium, which offers the "Koolhouse" at $129 as against a suggested retail price of $199, is appropriate to the projection of Kool, and test scores (before the promotion was adopted) revealed that advertising for the offer was effective in gaining readership. Advertising began nationally in April, and will continue through to June. Color pages like that illustrated are scheduled in 39 national publications - like Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Ladies Home Journal, McCall's and Field & Stream - together with local support in Sunday rotogravure newspapers, interior bus and subway cards, and large outdoor bulletin boards in Kool's better U. S. markets. The theme and its projection are constant throughout the campaign. Point-of-sale display carries on the same integrated approach. A 60-carton floor display has been tested in selected large food stores. Brenda Henderson states that "assuming that half the sales gain in the test stores were from new smokers, this display would pay for itself in one year". The design of this display echoes that of the "Koolhouse", with mesh screens and canopied roof. Other p-o-s items (some of them illustrated here) include aisle spanners, posters, shelf talkers, check lane display bases, permanent metal display riser cards, and 2-carton temporary counter displays. The "Koolhouse" features in them all, either 2 or 3 dimensionally. Many of them carry tear- off coupons, to be completed by those wishing to take advantage of the offer. It is obviously far too early to draw conclusions as to the effectiveness of the new promotion. But Brown & Williamson are guardedly optimistic in the light of their pre-promotion advertising tests and the success of their last major offer for Kool - the sailboat self liquidator which we reported in "Marketing News" of July and December 1971, and which was repeated for a second year.
