Tobacco Cigs Brand Marketing News

The 1973 Maxwell Report On The U. S. Cigarette Market

The "Tobacco Reporter" magazine deals first with Maxwell's world wide ratings and then goes on to review U. S. domestic sales. "In the world cigarette market", the article announces, "the big news is that an American cigarette, Marlboro, became the ????? 1 cigarette last year with an estimate of over 105 billion units". It continues: "Philip Morris Inc., with 1972 sales of 225 billion units is now the second largest publicly held company in the world after British-American Tobacco, which sold in excess of 460 billion units last year". On the domestic scene, the industry is described as "expanding aggressively" at a time when the industry has shown the largest jump (3. 8%) in recent history. Of the major brands, Kool (Brown & Williamson's progressive menthol brand) increased the most with a jump of 13.8% for the year. Vantage (Reynolds) showed the best increase among new brands - 21%, and Carlton with 27.6% showed the best increase among smaller brands. In the "How the brands ranked" table Maxwell shows Marlboro's hard and soft packs separately, with the result that Kool appears as the country's ????? 2 brand, having overhauled Pall Mall Plain. If one adds the two Marlboro pack variations, it-becomes clear that Marlboro is now pressing market leader Winston very closely for the ????? 1 position. In the table headed "Brand name comparison" (in which all versions and packing's are included for each brand name) the only "Top 10" change is that caused by Kent taking over sixth place from Camel. As for last year, the most impressive growth in volume has been by Philip Morris (+ 10.3%) and Brown & Williamson (- 6.3%o). Of the other major companies Reynolds (+ 1.8) Lorillard (- 2.3%) and American Brands (- 0.9%) show increased volume. Liggett & Myers shows a 5.l% decrease in sales volume in comparison with the previous year. In the same issue (November 1973) of "Tobacco Reporter'' is an interesting item which looks at the U. S. cigarette market from a different viewpoint. This item, based on research conducted by W. R. Simmons & Associates, examines the age, sex and race breakdowns of the smokers of the brands of the major U. S. companies. Philip Morris and Brown & Williamson have both succeeded in winning the loyalty of younger smokers (with Marlboro and Kool). The article comments: "By having their strongest market shares in the 18-24 age group, PM and B&W appear likely to gain market share in coming years as their customers mature into the heavy-smoking 25-44 age range". In age terms Reynolds is fairly evenly balanced, while American Brands, Lorillard and L&M "have distinct weaknesses in the under-25 age group".
