The Maxwell Report In Perspective

Unless Brown St Williamson growth accelerates, Philip Morris will be in third position by the end of 1970'. This can hardly be justified by Philip Morris sales performance during 1969. The apparent "lift" in their figures is caused by the successful introduction, in the latter part of 1968, of their VIRGINIA SLIMS. The growth since then, according to wholesalers' reports, has favored Brown & Williamson, and the B&W margin over Philip Morris during the last quarter of 1969 was, in fact, approximately double what it was in the first quarter.
The Report also stated that MARLBORO'S appeal was to upper-income, better educated people - an appeal which, we now understand, is not borne out in brand studies since MARLBORO is a full-flavored cigarette and, as such, has a general appeal, whereas it is the high-filtration cigarettes which are slanted towards the upper-income, better educated smokers.
Commenting on the popularity of KOOL among Negro smokers, B&W wish to emphasize that the brand's growth is in fact rather evenly spread over all market segments. KOOL (the fastest-growing menthol cigarette) shares with MARLBORO, the fastest-growing non-menthol cigarette, a "skew" towards men rather than women. Alone among menthols, KOOL has this masculine bias among its smokers. Both KOOL and MARLBORO outperform their competitors in having much better than average proportions of young and new smokers. "Marketing/Communications" stated too that KOOL was the most heavily mentholated of all U. S. menthol brands, but there are, we are told, at least five in national distribution which have heavier menthol levels. Of interest is the fact the word "menthol" has not been used in KOOL advertising for many years - "extra coolness" being the virtue promoted. On coupon schemes, the Report's comment that coupon merchandise has a stigma of cheapness is rot borne out Brown & Williamson tend to believe that coupon brands, other than RALEIGH and BELAIR, have no: achieved success because they were fading brands to begin with and the addition of coupons was not to be expected to reverse already declining trends It is also felt that there is no evident growth in popularity for trading stamps Commenting on the 9% market share represented by coupon brands, as against the 7% of a year previously, B&W remark that one should attribute this to the application of coupons to five CHESTERFIELD versions rather than to any increased consumer demand for coupons. The reference to retailer incentive schemes for encouraging allocation of display space in proportion to market share is also rather misleading it seems, for while competitors' plans are based on payment for display, only that of B&W is "proportional1' in terms of market share.
