Some World cigarette trends as we enter the 1980's

B. A. T. faces competition from large international companies local national companies and State Monopolies. However, our most intense rivals are the three major international companies, Philip Morris, Reynolds and Rothmans which, together with B. A. T. account for over half of the free world cigarette business. B. A. T. is still by far the largest company with a widespread geographical penetration and a growth of 3% p. a. which is in line with the average of the major companies and ahead of the free world average growth of 2. 5%. Philip Morris remains our nearest and most aggressive rival with sales of 390 billions and a relatively high 6% rate of growth. During 1978 Philip Morris purchased the international business of LIGETT and MYERS which included brands such as L & M, CHESTERFIELD and LARK, while in early 1979, it acquired a further company in Argentina. These acquisitions together with their progress in Europe, Middle East and the Far East, particularly with MARLBORO demonstrate only too clearly the serious threat posed by Philip Morris. Although the growth of MARLBORO is the key to the success of Philip Morris, the 1980s will see the emergence of a broader range of brands from this company in order to meet the variable needs of smokers around the world. Already there are signs of this in Latin America with brands such as GALAXY. Reynolds, after a burst of internationalism in the early 1970s which resulted in several acquisitions of overseas companies and an expansion of its export business, has leveled off to a current growth rate of about 2%. Although it is a progressive company in certain markets, it is difficult to see how it can significantly expand its international business in the 1980s except by further acquisitions or license agreements, because this company is unlikely to sanction the expenditure of the large amounts of capital necessary to start up in new markets. Rothmans remains the fourth ranked company but because it does not have a presence in the U. S. A. market, it is a more significant competitor to B. A. T. around the world than Reynolds. As we enter the 1980s this group comprises some highly successful companies around the world but a few of its significant subsidiaries continue to decline, albeit slowly. Overall, the outlook for the Big Four is one of continuing growth but the current momentum of Philip Morris is likely to sustain a higher rate of growth than that of the other three, over the next few years.
