Now no people, no scenery, in Swedish cigarette advertisements

Sweden was one of the earlier countries to have restrictions governing what cigarette advertisements could say or show. Its previous restrictions have been voluntary and self-imposed. No models under a certain age were to be used; there was to be no portrayal of those admired by young people, and there were to be no health claim implications. Now Sweden has gone a stage further, and cigarette advertisers are now to be precluded by official rulings from showing people at all, and even from showing attractive scenic views. Some of the other advertisers are more directly hit. For example, Prince KSFT has for many years advertised in one consistently applied style, with each ad showing the face of a smoker with a phrase which translates: "I too have gone over to Prince". Presumably a new Prince campaign will have to be drastically different. Marlboro too must change. Its campaign has hitherto majored on people, and now (at least temporarily) advertising is concentrating on dramatized views of the pack.  Sweden's Market Council examined advertising campaigns for certain brands (including Kent and Marlboro) which could be cited as being representative of commonly used cigarette advertising approaches. In the case of Marlboro, for example, it was ruled that the models shown and the setting in which they were shown were such as to arouse envy or admiration in young people. In the Kent case it was stated that showing human models in advertising ''encourages the idea of cigarette smoking as an almost natural element in a pleasant relation between people", and that the same applied, to a large extent, with attractive pictured environments. In the case of a menthol brand called Mindex, the verdict of the Market Council was that the portrayal of fresh water in a natural environment could be regarded as showing a symbol of health and soundness with the brand concerned. So cigarette advertisers in Sweden now have to work within a very much more limited creative sphere. The penalty for infringement is a fine of one hundred thousand kronor - the equivalent of well over eight thousand pounds. Future Swedish cigarette advertising will be interesting to watch. Perhaps the pattern will settle into a mass of pack-presentation approaches: more hopefully, we may see how creative ingenuity rises to the challenge which the new restrictions present.
