Excerpts from Analytical Evaluation of Mild Seven Products From Different Asian Countries,
Brown & Williamson,
November 11, 1999
Summary
Mild Seven cigarettes for the Asian market are manufactured in several countries. The cigarettes made in Japan are produced for the Japan market, as well as Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan with the exception of Mild Seven Lts. for Taiwan that is made under Japan Tobacco license in the U.K. Mild Seven for China is made In Switzerland, while the Malaysia product is made in Malaysia. The present study compares twelve Mild Seven products. Analytical evaluation using DS scan and HFP scan showed the following:
• Mild Seven cigarettes made in Japan have two versions. One for the Japan market and the other for markets outside of Japan.
• The products are different from country to country, with the exception of Korea, Hong Kong and the FF style from Taiwan, which are similar to each other.
• Within the same country the tobacco is the same in FF and in Lts styles, with the exception of Taiwan where the tobacco section for each styles (FF, Lts. International) is different.
• Mild Seven cigarettes made outside Japan contain a high level of benzoic acid, commonly used as a preservative in tobacco.
Results And Discussion
Twelve Mild Seven products from Japan and other Asian countries were analytical evaluated by DS scan and HFP scan. DS scan provides information on humectants, sugars, sugar-ammonia markers, and several tobacco specific acids, while HFP scan provides information on the flue-cured/burley/oriental ratios as well as on some specific tobacco compounds. The descriptions of the twelve products are listed in table.

As seen from DS scan results, Mild Seven FF Japan and Mild Seven Us. Japan were identical products. However, all the similarity indices between Japan products and the products from outside Japan were below, and not even close to 90%. This would indicate that the Mild Seven products sold In Japan and sold Internationally were different cigarettes. Mild Seven Korea Us., Hong Kong FF, Hong Kong Lts, and Taiwan FF had all their similarity Index values above 90%, This would suggest that these four products were very similar to each other. Mild Seven Taiwan International style seemed to be slightly different, but closer, to these four products than to other Mild Seven cigarettes. This was because the index values between these four products and Taiwan International style Were below,-but close to 90%.
The two Malaysia products seemed to be identical products. The two China products were made in Switzerland and were also identical. They were different from the products made in Japan.
The three Mild Seven Taiwan products were not similar to each other. As indicated above, Taiwan FF was identical to Korea and Hong Kong products. Taiwan Lts. was closer to the China products and Taiwan International, although different from other cigarettes, was somewhat closer to Taiwan FF cigarette.
The HFP scan results, regarding the blend composition practices, showed the same classification as DS scan. These results indicated that there were significant variations in tobacco blend composition among Mild Seven products. There were probably two tobacco blends for Mild Seven products made In Japan. One blend was for the products sold in Japan, as Mild Seven Japan FF and Lts. had the same tobacco blend. This blend was characterized by a low percentage of oriental tobacco (estimated at 5% to 10%) and a relatively higher flue-cured/burley ratio compared to most American cigarettes (for example Marlboro). Another blend was made for Asian market, such as Korea Lts., Hong Kong FF, Hong Kong Lts., Taiwan FF and Taiwan International. This blend had a slightly higher percentage of oriental tobacco and a lower flue-cured/burley ratio than the Japan products. Perhaps, Japan Tobacco tried to design this blend to be closer to typical American blended cigarettes. This group did not Include Taiwan Lts., which was made under Japan Tobacco license in U.K. and had a blend similar to the Japan products (characterized by a low percentage of oriental tobacco), rather than the two other Taiwan products.
The two China products had a unique tobacco blend. The percentage of oriental tobacco was similar to that in Korea and Hong Kong products, but the flue-cured/burley ratio was similar to the Japan products.
The tobacco blend in the two Malaysia products was different from all the others. It seemed to have the lowest percentage of oriental tobacco, or had the same percentage of oriental tobacco as the Japan products, but used a low grade of tobacco. The usage of burley in the Malaysia products was significantly higher than all the other products.
A highly elevated level of benzoic acid, commonly used as a preservative in tobacco, was found in some of the Mild Seven products. The level of this compound was estimated at about 50 ppm to 100 ppm. The two Malaysia products, two China products and Taiwan Lts. product contained benzoic acid. It seemed that Japan Tobacco used a special formula for all the Mild Seven products made outside Japan, This formula contained a high level of benzoic acid. This would also support our conclusion that Taiwan Lts. was a unique cigarette, and was different from the other Mild Seven cigarettes in the Taiwan market. |
