Tobacco Cigs Brand Marketing News

Lucky Strike makes filtered turnaround

New York—Heavy advertising is breaking in this market non-American Tobacco's new low-tar filter version of Lucky Strike (AA, Oct. 4), the once highly popular brand name that suffered mightily when the company failed to respond quickly to the filter cigarette trend in the early 1950s. Based on sales results to date in other rollout markets, American Tobacco apparently feels it has salvaged the 66-year-old franchise. The non-filter version of Lucky Strike, one of the nation's top-selling cigarettes decades ago, currently has less than a 1% share of market. American exec vp Thomas C. Hays said that new Luckies have achieved between a 0,5% to 1% share in test and rollout markets. On top of that, Mr. Hays noted that almost all of the new smoke's sales represent "incremental business" to American. One of the factors that has aided the brand thus far is the fact that Lucky Strike's brand awareness is 97% among adults under 35 and 98% among people 35 and older. Despite its impressive sales numbers, American has taken a deliberate, go-slow approach with Luckies since the brand entered test late last year in Binghamton, N. Y., and Spokane, Wash. (AA. Sept. 28, '81). At present, the cigarettes distribution is concentrated in the Midwest and Northwest, or roughly one-third of the nation. The brand's introduction here will be followed quickly by a move into Detroit. Mr. Hays said the company will attempt to reach smokers in the 21- to-35 age bracket via regional magazines, newspapers, outdoor and taxi/bus posters. In addition, American will sample with full packs at bars, restaurants, arenas, bowling alleys and discos. The free packs will contain a $2-off coupon on a carton purchase. On top of that, Luckies will be sponsoring dart and bowling tournaments. Ads by Laurence, Charles & Free, showing a young male smoker about to light up a Lucky, are headlined, "Lucky Strikes again. The moment is right for it. "The well-remembered slogan, "L. S. /M. F. T. - Lucky Strike means fine tobacco," also appears on packs. Should Lucky Strike maintain its current sales momentum, American Tobacco will have duplicated the feat R. J. Reynolds Tobacco accomplished recently when it revitalized its venerable Camel franchise by introducing Camel Lights.
