JTI's total sales are estimated to have fallen by 2.1% to 279 bn in 1996. Profits (in ?‚?? Sterling terms) are estimated to be down by 13% to ?‚??813 mn. JTI's sales were down by 3.6 bn in it's key home market Japan, win share falling to 74.5% (vs. 76.4% in 1995). In export markets, JTI's business fell by an estimated 23.7% in 1996 due largely to declines in South Korea and Iran.
